Tutorial
Getting started
- Allow microphone, precise location and notifications when the app asks. Location tags each session with where it was recorded.
- Make a short test recording first, so you know the levels and the view.
- To use a Bluetooth microphone, pair it before you start. The app switches to it automatically. If it doesn’t connect within a few seconds, the app records from the phone’s microphone and tells you.
Recording
- Tap REC on the main screen. The live view shows the last 10 seconds, scrolling. Use the switch at its top right to change between waveform and spectral.
- PAUSE stops capturing. Nothing is recorded while paused, and the timeline shows the real clock, with a dashed break line where you paused.
- REVIEW plays back the last 10 seconds. Recording pauses during the review, so the playback is never recorded, and resumes when the review ends or you tap STOP REVIEW.
- STOP saves the recording. The original is fingerprinted as it is saved, and an Enhanced version is made automatically.
- Recording carries on if the screen locks or you switch apps.
Marking sounds
- Tap the live waveform at the moment a sound starts. The marker lands on the audio you tapped, so you can mark a sound just after you hear it.
- Or press MARK to mark the current moment.
- Choose a tag: EVP candidate, or an ambient sound (Voice, Footsteps, Vehicle, Door, Clothing, Animal, Equipment or Other). Close the sheet to keep the marker as a plain event.
- Markers show on the live view and in the player, each in its own colour.
Reviewing in the player
- ORIGINAL and ENHANCED switch between versions. The player opens on Enhanced.
- Switch between waveform and spectral at the top right of the view. Your default is set in Settings.
- Zoom with two fingers, pinch in or out. When zoomed in, drag with one finger to scroll.
- Tap the waveform to move the playhead. Tap a marker to change its type, delete it, or play from it.
- To select a section, press and hold, then drag. Drag the white handles to adjust either end.
- Play and PAUSE. The speed control runs from 0.25x to 2x. Changing speed never starts playback.
- PREV and NEXT jump between markers. With a selection highlighted, they stay inside it.
- LOOP repeats the selection, or the part of the waveform you are zoomed in on, or the whole file.
- On a selection: one tap moves the playhead and keeps the selection. Double tap zooms to the selection, double tap again zooms back out. Triple tap clears the selection.
Enhancing and cleaning up
- COMPAND ENHANCE raises quiet sounds. It works on the whole recording, or on the selection.
- NOISE REDUCTION reduces steady background hum. It works on the whole recording (up to 20 minutes at a time; select a section for longer recordings) or on the selection.
- Both create a new version. Your original is never changed.
- CLIP saves the selection as a new version. BACK returns you to where you were.
- UNDO steps back one action at a time. The label shows what the next press will undo. Removed versions can be restored from the version list.
Sharing
- SHARE sends the version you are on. With a selection highlighted, only that section is shared.
- Choose WAV (original quality, with markers and the full session details) or Compressed (M4A, much smaller, carries the location only).
- Shared files are named after the session and the version.
Sessions and evidence packages
- SESSIONS lists your recordings, with time, location, length and marker count.
- Tap the â‹® on a session to export an evidence package or delete it.
- Long-press to select several sessions. Export them together (one package each, shared together) or delete them together with one UNDO.
- An evidence package holds the original, every version, the markers, the session record, and a manifest with the SHA-256 fingerprint of every file. The original is checked against its recorded fingerprint at export, and any warnings are listed before you share.
- Deleted sessions go to Recently Deleted for the period set in Settings (7, 30 or 90 days, or until you empty it). Restore them or delete them for good from there.
Importing
IMPORT, in the bottom bar, opens a file picker for audio or video. The original file is kept as it was, and its audio opens in the player with the same tools.
Settings
- Default view (waveform or spectral) and default version (Enhanced or Original).
- Cast: connect a Chromecast from Settings, then Cast or Stop from the player.
- Recently Deleted: how long deleted sessions are kept.
- Red-light mode for dark rooms.
- Sessions folder: Documents › GLITCH EVP. Open it from Settings. Your recordings stay there if the app is uninstalled.
The Web App
Open, review and share audio in a browser at glitch.ws/analyzer. It also records in the browser, as a backup for quick captures. Keep the page open and the screen on, because browsers pause a recording when the page is hidden.
Files are processed entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
WAV files shared from the GLITCH EVP app open with their markers and session details.
If something goes wrong
- If recording stops early (storage full, microphone removed), the audio up to that point is kept and marked Interrupted.
- If the app closes during a recording, reopen it. The recording is recovered with its audio and markers.
